#116 I'm Scared For Daddy

Rousso has his arm in a cast from a minor accident while rescuing someone during a fire. When the cast is removed, Wimzie doesn't want Rousso to return to work for fear of another accident. Despite assurances from her dad, Yaya and Graziella, Wimzie withdraws into a shell under the blankets on her bed. Yaya and the kids are taking care of a friend's turtle for a week and the little animal also won't come out of it's shell. When it's head does appear, a thrown ball accidentally drops on it and the little turtle retreats inside. Wimzie tries to explain to the turtle that accidents happen, not yet understanding the connection to what has happened with her dad. Then, a letter comes to the house from a little boy, thanking Rousso for saving his dad's life and Wimzie realizes the importance of her dad's work. Thanks to him, this little boy has his father to play with.

Suggested Activities:
Before you view: In today's story, Yaya and the children are "pet sitting". Watch and see what kind of an animal it is.
While you view: See suggestions in "How to use this guide".
After you view: Go back to your pre-viewing activity and have the children respond to the question.
(Answer: A turtle.) Talk about what you've seen and take some time to discuss it.

Extended Learning Activities
Option 1: Learning about Healing (Discussion Activity)
Materials needed: None

This show can be used to begin a discussion about injury and healing. Talking about injury can help children: express feelings, learn about healing, be aware of safety rules. Ask the children why Wimzie is afraid to have Rousso go back to work. (Answer: she's afraid that if he returns to work he will get hurt again.) Talk to the children about getting hurt. Share with them a story about when you had an injury and it healed. Encourage them to talk about a time when they were injured or were affected by someone else's injury. Here are some questions to focus the discussion:

  • Have you ever had an accident where you got hurt?
  • What did you do to help heal your injury?
Tell the children that we can't always protect ourselves from getting hurt. Discuss with the children some ways to heal an injury. For example: Band-Aids, casts, slings, ointments. Discuss with the children some safety rules that can help prevent accidents.
