#118 The Hand Me Down Sweater

Loulou is anxious to tell her friends about her new sweater, handed down to her from Jonas. Loulou's excitement is overshadowed by Jonas who has just gotten a brand new sweater. Loulou comes to feel that her sweater is not special because it is not new and she throws it in the trash. In the meantime Rousso is cleaning out the garage and deciding what things are still useful. Wimzie, Jonas and Horace find alternate uses for these things, and learn the importance of recycling. When Loulou learns from Yaya that old things can be just as special as new things, she is sad because she has already thrown her sweater away. She then learns that Wimzie has rescued her sweater from the trash. Loulou is thrilled to have her comfy and warm sweater back.

Extended Learning Activities
Option 1: Old and New (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None

Have the children close their eyes and think of something that is very special to them. Ask them to think about whether this special thing is old or new. Have the children open their eyes and talk about the special thing they were thinking about. Was it old or new? Ask the children if something can be just as special whether it is old or it is new. Invite the children to bring their special thing to share it with their friends.

Option 2: Category Collage (Collage Activity)
Materials required: Paper, paste/glue, old magazines and children's scissors
Give each child or group a magazine and ask them to find pictures from categories such as: colors, people, animals, vehicles, etc. Have the children tear or cut out pictures. Help them in pasting and making a collage. Encourage the children to share what they think about their collages. Discuss the idea that the collages are new, but they were made out of recycled materials.

Option 3: Create our own Recycling Bins (Craft Activity)
Materials required: Something to serve as recycling bins (you can use standard bins if you have them or two large boxes), paper, crayons/markers/paints, glue/paste/tape
Tell the children that as a group they are going to design recycling bins. Use two large boxes to serve as the recycling bins. As a group decide what the bins will hold. Have the children create pictures/signs indicating what types of items belong in each bin. Have them paste or tape their creations to the bins or boxes. Discuss the concept of recycling. Have the children use the bins and actually start recycling their paper, drink boxes, or other items they use daily.
