#127 The Storm

One night, a thunderstorm scares Wimzie. Rousso and Graziella comfort her while Bo just snores away. The next day, Jonas and Horace say the storm didn't scare them. However, Loulou admits that she was also scared. Loulou decides to stay close to Yaya who happens to be baking her "Thunder Cake" designed for kids who are afraid of thunder. After one loud crack of thunder, Loulou is not the only one eating the "Thunder cake." Everyone is scared. Rousso explains that thunder is not dangerous even if it is very loud. To help the kids get used to the loud noise, Rousso brings out his marching band bass drum. At first the kids are shy but soon they end up having fun "making thunder" on Rousso's drum. That night a storm awakens Bo and he starts to cry. Wimzie comforts him by bringing him into bed and by reminding him about the day's lesson on thunder. The next day, Wimzie realizes that by helping Bo, she managed to forget her own fears.

Theme: Coping with Fear
  • Children will recognize that when they are afraid there are ways of coping: seeking help from others, finding a safe place, using a familiar object, such as a blanket or a toy.
  • Children will realize that children and adults are afraid sometimes, and that it is okay.
  • Children will learn to recognize their own fear and seek help.
  • Children will learn that helping someone else overcome his/her fears is a good way to get over their own fears.

Vocabulary:
thunder
lightning
compromise

Suggested Activities:
Before you view: Rousso says that firefighters love it when it rains, watch and see why.
While you view: See suggestions in "How to use this guide".
After you view: Go back to your pre-viewing activity and have the children respond to the question. (Answer: Because there are not as many fires when it rains.) Talk about what you've seen and take some time to discuss it.

Extended Learning Activities
Option 1: A Thunderous Band (Music activity)
Materials required: metal pots and pans, wooden spoons, a flashlight
Have the children make thunder sounds with the pot, pans and spoons. Have them use a flashlight to make lightning. Explain that far away thunder will sound softer, and as the storm moves closer will get louder. Have the children make sounds for the storm.

Option 2: Preparing for the Weather (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None
Have a discussion circle with the children. Talk about how Wimzie and the others were afraid of thunder. Ask children if there is any type of weather that they find scary. Discuss how learning about different weather and ways to prepare for it can help minimize their fears. Together with the children, list different types of weather and how one prepares for it. For example: Where do you go when it's very cold outside? What do you wear when you're outside in the cold? What do you wear when it snows? What do you use to stay dry in the rain? Where do you go when it rains and thunders? How do you prepare for hot weather?.
