#130 Queen For A Day

Today is the day Wimzie catches the flu. She is sent to bed but proves to be a very difficult patient, demanding attention from Yaya and everyone else. Wimzie's sneezing causes a puzzle tower that Jonas and the others are building to topple time and time again. Everyone's patience is wearing thin. Ultimately, Wimzie learns that the quickest way to get back to your friends when you are sick is to rest up and get better.

Extended Learning Activities
Option 1: When I'm Sick I Can't...But I Can... (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None
Have the children sit in a talking circle. Ask if any of the children have ever been sick. Ask them what activities are good to do when they are sick and what activities are not okay to do if they are sick. For example, can they jump around, can they color, can they play with friends, can they go swimming? Ask them if they remember what their parents or doctor told them to do to get better (Answers will vary but may include: Get plenty of rest, drink a lot of fluids.)

Option 2: Germ Busters (Discussion and Poster Making Activity)
Materials required: A large piece of paper, markers
Talk about germs and how disease is spread. Mention how covering one's mouth when coughing and sneezing, disposing of tissues and good hand washing can prevent the spreading of many viruses and bacteria. Make a "Germ Busters" poster listing the main ways the class can prevent the spread of germs, and read it aloud with the children. Note: The pediatric consultant to this project specifically emphasized the importance of teaching children to wash their hands regularly to avoid the spread of germs.

Option 3: What's in a Doctors Bag? (Special Visitor Activity)
Materials required: None
Ask a local pediatrician to visit the class. Have the doctor bring his/her medicine bag and explain to the children what each thing in the bag is used for. Have the doctor answer any questions the children might have. Ask the pediatrician to give the children some basic tips for healthy living.
