#131 The Jingle

The kids enter the "Find a Jingle" contest for Bananabits cereal. The best jingle wins a Rockin' Rollin' Wagon. But to get it, the winner must also play his jingle for a TV ad. Wimzie wins with her jingle about the great taste of Bananabits. But after one bite of the famous cereal, she realizes she hates the taste. She decides she can't do the commercial and lie to the kids watching TV. The other kids remind her that she won't get the wagon unless she does the commercial. Wimzie changes her mind in order to get the wagon, but still can't stomach Bananabits. Meanwhile, Rousso has bought a vegetable cutter- the Veggie Viper- advertised on TV, but the contraption doesn't work the way the commercial said. This restores Wimzie's sense of honesty and she realizes she can't lie about Bananabits on TV. But she comes up with a great solution: she asks her friends- who love Bananabits- to eat cereal in the background while she sings a modified version of her jingle. The Bananabits people are so happy that they end up sending two Rockin' Rollin' Wagons: one for Wimzie and one for her friends.

Theme: Honesty
  • Children will learn to recognize that it does not feel good to be dishonest.
  • Children will learn that certain decisions can affect the whole community.
  • Children will learn that they do not always have to compromise if they really believe in something.
  • Children will learn that sometimes they can achieve a goal or accomplish a task better by combining their skills and resources with those of others.

Suggested Activities:
Before you view: Rousso buys something he sees on TV. Watch to see what it is.
While you view: See suggestions in "How to use this guide".
After you view: Go back to your pre-viewing activity and have the children respond to the question. (Answer: A Veggie Viper.) Talk about what you've seen and take some time to discuss it.

Extended Learning Activities
Option 1: Creating a Message (Art, Teamwork and Imagination)
Materials required: Advertisements in magazines for food, toys, anything specifically targeted to children, construction paper, markers, glue/tape, scissors

Show children a selection of advertisements from magazines. Watch and critique commercials with the children. Point out when advertisers make false or exaggerated statements. Help teach them to be critical viewers. (The children's magazine Zillions helps kids become aware of the advertising industry.)

Ask them to help create a message about a place they really enjoy- and that they know others will enjoy- like daycare, or the library. Encourage the children to work together in small groups so that everyone's ideas may be included. Ask the children to draw or cut out pictures to make a message about their special place.

Option 2: Kids Create a New Breakfast Cereal (Creative Writing Activity)
Materials required: Paper, markers, and magazines
Tell the children they are going to invent a new cereal. Give each child or group a magazine that would likely have advertisements for cereal. Have the children look through the magazines to stimulate some ideas. Then, give the children some time to "brainstorm" the qualities of the new cereal. You can structure the activity by asking these questions: If you were to create a cereal what would it be like? What would it look like? What would it taste like? Would it be crunchy, sweet or salty? Would it have a surprise in the box? Would it be a healthy cereal or would it be "junk" cereal?
