#132 The Dropsies
|
Wimzie is being careless and is dropping and breaking things,
claiming every time that "it's an accident". She becomes
upset when the kids won't let her touch their things for fear
that she will destroy them. When Yaya tells a ghost story, Wimzie
decides that a ghost in the house is making her drop things.
She decides to stay up all night in order to bribe the ghost
with candy and make it go away. But she falls asleep and Yaya
takes the candy. This makes Wimzie think that the "ghost"
has made off with the bargain. She becomes confident and stops
having accidents. That's when Yaya reveals that she took the
candy, not the ghost, thereby showing Wimzie she is capable
of controlling what happens to her. Eventually, Wimzie understands
that if she is careful, accidents won't always happen.

| After

pre-viewing activity and have the children respond to the question.
(Answer: Yaya was pretending to be the peppermint candy ghost.)
Talk about what you've seen and take some time to discuss it. |
Extended Learning Activities |
Option
1: Being Careless Is Not an Accident (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None
|
| Talk
to the children about Wimzie's carelessness. Wimzie was dropping,
knocking into and breaking things but she was always claiming
"it's an accident". Ask the children if they think Wimzie
was having accidents or if she was just being careless. See
if the children can tell you the difference between the two.
Jonas, Horace and Loulou didn't want Wimzie to play with their
things. Ask the children if they can remember why not. Would
they let Wimzie play with their stuff? Why or why not? Explain
to the children that Wimzie thought the ghost had removed the
accident spell. Ask them how they think that Wimzie was finally
able to be careful. (Answer: Because she believed that she could.)
|
Option 2: Balancing Exercise (Gross Motor Activity)
Materials required: Masking tape, a tray or large unbreakable
plate, and three paper cups filled half way with dry beans |
| Make
a line on the floor using the masking tape, about ten feet long
to act as a balance beam. Tell the children that they are going
to walk on the line and carry the tray of cups filled with dry
beans. The point is to walk slowly and carefully and pay attention.
If this exercise is too easy, tell the children to hold the
tray with only one hand and walk the length of the "balance
beam". Note to caregivers: Some children are uncoordinated
due to neurological or genetic reasons. Encourage other children
to be tolerant and understanding. Keep their skill level in
mind when performing the above activities. |
