#133 Wimzie The Magician

Wimzie wants to know how Rousso does his magic parlor tricks, but he can't tell her because of the "magicians' code"- never reveal how a trick is done. But if Wimzie wants to be a magician, Rousso says that he will train her. Wimzie agrees and after practicing performs some tricks for her friends. Loulou becomes frightened that Wimzie is a real magician who can turn people into toads and other creatures. The only way to convince Loulou otherwise is to show her how a trick is done...but that would mean violating the magicians' code. Instead, Wimzie asks Rousso to teach Loulou how to be a magician with a trick of her own. Loulou then learns that performing magic is not some unexplained, scary mystery or witch craft, but the result of skill and talent.

Extended Learning Activities
Option 1: Understanding Our Fears (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None
Remind the children of Loulou's fear of magic. Talk about how after Loulou learned a magic trick of her own she was no longer afraid of "Wimzie the Magician." Discuss with the children how learning about something can help you be less afraid of it. Share with the children a story of a fear that you had that was lessened when you learned more about it. Have the children talk about their own experiences.

Option 2: What Goes into a Magic Show? (Listing and Art Activity)
Materials required: Paper, crayons/markers
Ask if anyone has seen a magic show. If not, have them name the things related to magic as seen in "Wimzie the Magician." Make a list of things related to a magic show. For example: magicians, rabbits, magic hats, magic wands, scarves, cards. Have the children choose something on the list and draw a picture of it.

Option 3: Learning Magic Tricks (Presentation Activity)
Materials required: A book of simple magic tricks for children (available at your local library or book store)
Teach yourself one of the magic tricks from a book or use one you already know. Perform the trick for the children. Do it again, slowly. Ask the children if they have any ideas how the trick is done. Offer to teach the children to be magicians with this trick and then show them step by step how the trick is done. Ask if any of the children want to perform the trick themselves.
