#136 Cinderloulou

Horace, Wimzie and Jonas are playing games that Loulou is either too unskilled or too small to play. They start taking advantage of her because she's the smallest. They con her into doing their chores and clean-ups in exchange for letting her participate. In the meantime, Yaya has promised the children special treats if they all do their chores promptly and well. But Yaya discovers that the older children are taking advantage of Loulou. When it comes time to give out the treats, Yaya arranges it so that Loulou is the last in line and there are no treats left. Horace, Wimzie and Jonas feel awful and, while still trying to hide what they were doing, insist on giving Loulou their treats. A few pointed questions later, the three culprits confess and apologize to Loulou. To make it up to her, they offer to play one of the games she likes best: the limbo!

Theme: Trust
  • Children will learn that it does not feel good to lose someone's trust, or to have their trust broken.
  • Children will learn that while their own needs are important, they must balance them with the needs of others.
  • Children will learn that it is hurtful to pick on, dismiss or make fun of others.
  • Children will learn that it is good to include others who are perceived as being different from themselves.

Before you view: Today Yaya makes special treats for the kids. Watch to see what kinds of treats they are.
While you view: See suggestions in "How to use this guide".

Extended Learning Activities
Option 1: Review "Cinderloulou" (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None

Have the children sit in a talking circle. Review today's show by asking the following questions. Discuss their responses. Remind the children that the kids won't play with Loulou because she's too small to play a particular game.

  1. What do the other kids tell Loulou she has to do in order to play this game with them? (Answer: She has to do their chores then she can play.)
  2. Do the other kids keep their promise and let Loulou play with them? (Answer: No, they don't keep their word and they continue to "take advantage" of Loulou by promising she can play with them after she finishes more of their chores.)
  3. Yaya says that Wimzie, Jonas and Horace were behaving just like characters in a certain fairy tale. What fairy tale was it? (Answer: Cinderella.)
  4. Which characters are they like and which character is Loulou behaving like? (Answer: Wimzie, Jonas and Horace are like the mean step sisters and Loulou is like Cinderella.)
  5. How do you think the others feel when Yaya praises them for the hard work they have done? How do you think the others feel when there are no more special people crackers for Loulou who really was the one who did all the work? (Answer: They feel ashamed and guilty because of the way they treated Loulou.)
  6. Wimzie, Jonas and Horace take advantage of Loulou because she is the youngest. Ask the children if they can tell you what it means to take advantage of someone?
Option 2: Limbo (Movement Activity)
Materials required: A long pole such as a mop or broom handle, audio tape (reggae or calypso music is suggested)
Have the children play a game of limbo. Play the music. Have two people hold each side of the pole. Have the children form a single file line. Have each child go under the pole. The goal is not to touch the pole with any part of your body. (If you do you're out.) When the last person in line goes under the pole, have the "pole holders" lower the pole a little and repeat the process until no one can fit underneath.
