#140 The Accident

Loulou comes to daycare with her leg in a cast. Horace, Wimzie and Bo are quite impressed and interested in the whole situation. However, Jonas seems very grumpy. At first, Yaya thinks he's jealous of the attention Loulou is getting so she suggests playing a game that he would like. Loulou agrees and says that Jonas is a good big brother. Jonas then bursts into tears and runs out. Eventually Yaya learns that Jonas feels responsible for his sister getting hurt since Loulou tripped on a roller-skate he'd left on the floor- after his mom had asked him to put it away. Things get back to normal when Jonas apologizes to Loulou and discovers she's not mad at him and still thinks he's a good brother. Jonas says that from now on, he'll make sure to pick up his toys.

While you view: See suggestions in "How to use this guide".
After you view: Go back to your pre-viewing activity and have the children respond to the question. (Answer: Jonas is upset because he didn't pick up his skate, and that caused Loulou to trip.) Talk about what you've seen and take some time to discuss it.

Extended Learning Activities
Option 1: A Review of "The Accident" (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None

Have a discussion with the children about today's story.

  1. How do you think Jonas felt after Loulou broke her leg? (Answer: responsible, guilty, sad, ashamed)
  2. Why do you think he didn't tell anybody what he was feeling? (Answer: He was scared that it was all his fault and that Loulou would be mad at him and think he was a bad brother.)
  3. What would you have done if you were Jonas?
  4. How do you think Jonas felt after he told Loulou the truth?
  5. Has anyone ever had a similar experience to Jonas?

If you have a related story, share it with the children. Tell them what you learned from the experience.

Option 2: Accidents Happen/Safety Tips (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None

Jonas learned an important lesson about putting his things away and creating a safer environment. Talk to the children about what they can do to create a safe home/school environment. Some examples are:

  • Pick up your things off the floor. Someone can trip on them.
  • Never use any electrical appliance without the supervision of an adult.
  • Stay away from things that are hot, i.e., ovens, stoves, hot water. Never play with matches.
  • Make sure that you tell an adult when something spills on the floor, and then help to clean it up. Wet floors can be slippery and someone can fall.
  • If an accident happens, tell an adult and ask for help.

See if the children have other safety ideas to add to the list. You might want to copy this list for each child to take home.
