#209 Shaggy's Visit

A stray but very friendly dog wanders into Wimzie's yard. The children are delighted and Wimzie falls in love with "Shaggy." Her parents explain to her that even though the dog has no tags, it may have a concerned owner and they must take it to the "pound" the next day. Wimzie does not want to give Shaggy up, nor does she think the pound sounds like a good place. That night she hides Shaggy in her room, cautions Bo not to tell, and fools her mother and grandmother with a story about Shaggy's running away. The next day, Wimzie persuades the others to participate in hiding Shaggy, but Yaya finds a "missing dog" poster and contacts the owner. The owner is distraught, Wimzie confesses, and after many apologies, all is forgiven, the dog goes home, and Wimzie knows a dog she can play with sometimes.

Extended Learning Activities
Option 1: Having Pets (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None
Ask the children if they have pets, or want to have a pet. Why do you like pets? What do you do with your pet? What do pets need? What do they eat? How do you take care of them? What animals are not very good for pets?
If the child care has a pet, this might be a time for children to take some responsibility for the pet, at least for a day or two to practice for when they get their own pets?

Option 2: Playing Animals (Role Play Activity)
Materials required: None

Ask children what animals they would like to be if they could change into one. What sounds does that animal make? How does it move? Help the children become the animals they choose and let them play it out. Pretend to feed them. Pretend there is a circus parade and they are in it. Pet them and admire their teeth and tails. Tell them it is time to rest. After they rest a little on the floor, say "Wake up, children," to bring them back to the ordinary world.

Option 3:Caring for Animals (Water Activity)
Materials required: Toy animals and dolls, no-tears shampoo, scrub brushes or toothbrushes; sink or water table
Children can help fill the sink or tub with warm water. Add shampoo to water to make it bubbly. Demonstrate with a brush how to gently wash the pet or doll. Let children scrub away. Rinse with clean water and put toys in the sun to dry or in a pillowcase in the dryer.
