#210 Boo!
Wimzie has invented
a game, "Boo," which is to surprise someone with a loud
"boo!" as often as possible. Everyone thinks it is fun except
Jonas who very much wants to spend quiet time with his dirt
collection. He is continually interrupted with Wimzie's
"boos!" He is very unhappy until he is able to tell her
that he does not want to play. Then she realizes that she
has kept him from doing what he really wanted. The same
day, Horace reveals to Loulou that he does not like the
child care program. Horace's reasons for not liking the
child care are somewhat unclear, even to him. Loulou asks
him many questions about why and he is frustrated. Loulou
interprets his frustration as dislike for her and is very
distressed. Later she discovers that she misunderstood him.
Everyone realizes they should talk openly about their feelings
to one another, because that is what friends do.

- Children will learn that it
is important to tell your friends what you really feel.
- Children will learn that you
do not have to play what everyone else is playing if you
want to do something else.
- Children will learn that sometimes
a group can make you feel uncomfortable so you need to speak
openly about not wanting to go along.

Go back to your pre-viewing activity and have the children respond
to the question. (Answer: Wimzie likes to play "Boo!" and Jonas
doesn't.) Talk about what you have seen and take some time to
discuss it. |
Extended Learning Activities |
Option 1: What are Friends,
Anyway? (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None |
| Ask
children what "friend" means. What do you do with friends? What
about birthday parties? What if your friend moves away - can
you still be friends? Are some things better with friends? Or
alone? What can someone do for a friend? |
Option 2: Making Collections (Exploration Activity)
Materials required: Bag for each child, markers/crayons, index
cards for labels, "science display" table or shelf |
|
Talk about how Jonas likes to
collect dirt samples. Ask the children if there are things
they would like to collect? Say that today we can take a walk
to find things to make a collection with -rocks, leaves, twigs,
trash! Ask children to decorate bags while they think about
things they might like to collect outside. Take a walk, letting
children collect things in their bags. After returning from
the walk, ask children to select three things from their bags
to put on display. Ask each child to say something about his/her
collection and write that on the index card by the object.
Let children arrange their displays on the table or shelf
and tell one another about them. Have families look at the
display when they come to pick up the children.
|
Option 3:Follow the Leader (Group Game Activity)
Materials needed: Lively music on tape and tape recorder |
| Tell
the children we'll play "Follow the Leader." Choose a child
who can think of such things quickly and ask him/her to show
us a movement we can follow. Then everyone do the movement,
such as marching, jumping, waving arms, stamping, hopping. Take
turns being the leader. Finish up with classic group games such
as Ring Around the Rosie, Farmer in the Dell, or London Bridge
is Falling Down. |
