#220 Wimzie's "Hushabye"
Rummaging through
a room of bric-a-brac with Yaya, Wimzie finds an interesting
stone. "My 'hushabye'" says Yaya, "something very special
to me." Wimzie goes looking for a "hushabye" for herself
and finds a beautiful, stuffed bluebird, Max, who amazingly
talks to her. Thrilled, Wimzie wants to show him off to
the others. Max tells Wimzie he is too shy, Wimzie insists,
and Max refuses to talk. Jonas and Horace scoff at Wimzie
who is so embarrassed and mad that she puts Max back in
the bric-a-brac room. Soon Loulou is in with Max, crooning
and chatting. Loulou promises Max never to reveal his ability
to talk, but Wimzie tries to get her to tell Horace and
Jonas. Loyal to Max, Loulou won't tell. Now Wimzie is mad
at Loulou too. With Yaya's sympathetic blend of stories
and advice, Wimzie finally realizes that being a friend
requires accepting people/stuffed birds just as they are
and being loyal to them. Wimzie invites everyone into the
living room for an "announcement" and publicly apologizes
to Max who then publicly speaks, converting the skeptics
Horace and Jonas. Max is now Wimzie's "hushabye" and the
day ends with Yaya tucking Wimzie and Max in for the night.

Suggested Activities: |
| Before
you view: Wimzie finds
someone special. How does she treat him? |
| While you view:
See suggestions in "How to use this guide" |
After
you view: Go back to your
pre-viewing activity and have the children respond to the question.
(Answer: Wimzie ignores her hushabye's feelings but then she
apologizes to him and he forgives her and they are special friends
again.) Talk about what you have seen and take some time to
discuss it. |
Extended Learning Activities |
Option
1: Our Own "Hushabyes" (Discussion Activity)
Materials required: None |
| Remind
children that in the program each person had someone special
to talk to, a doll (Loulou), a kitty (Horace), and a teddy bear
(Jonas). Ask children to share information about their special
"hushabyes." Perhaps some of the "hushabyes" have been brought
with the children for nap or quiet times? If you had a special
object tell the children about it. If the discussion develops
enough, you could write down some of the things children like
about their special objects (soft, smells good, talks to me,
etc.) and post the list where children can see it. Children
who want to draw can add pictures to or around the list. |
Option 2: Looking for Special Rocks (Outdoor Exploration Activity)
Materials required: Bag for each child if you go outside, sack
of rocks if inside, old toothbrushes, glue, markers, vegetable
oil |
|
Either go outside to a natural
area where children can search for interesting rocks as well
as play around, or spread out a big selection of rocks for
children to examine and choose one or two for their own. Let
them scrub them with old toothbrushes in the sink and see
how rocks look different when wet. Save the favorite rocks
in bags with child's name. The not-so-favorite rocks can be
colored or built into sculptures with glue or be rubbed with
a bit of vegetable oil for some shine.
If you don't have a beach or river or rocky place nearby,
a building supply store will have large quantities of different
size rocks and might even give you a bucketful. Even if you
have to buy them, it won't be expensive.
