Yaya is the universal grandmother who looks very much like a wild
and wacky bird. Nobody really knows her age but we suspect she may
be around 150 years old. In any case, Yaya is still limber, young
in appearance and definitely contemporary.
She lives in constant wonderment, is generous and draws people
to her heart like a magnet. Yaya is very spiritual and peaceful
with her lot in life. She is happy. But don't get the wrong impression,
she is certainly not boring! Yaya does not approve of monotony or
dreariness. One of her greatest pleasures in life is surprising
everyone and children are her favourite audience.
Yaya stays in great shape by doing aerobics or tai chi. She has
a voracious interest for anything and everything. She's a living
example that you're never too old to learn. She used to play guitar
in a couple of rock bands with whom she's traveled all over the
world.
Yaya is the daycare's authority figure without being authoritarian.
She looks forward to greeting the lively brood every day. In fact,
on the weekends, she just can't wait for Monday to see them all.
Her memory is phenomenal. Yaya never forgets anyone who has crossed
her path. She lived in the last century and so, of course, remembers
lots of things. Her inner world is full of interesting people and
places that she likes to share with the children. Yaya even writes
stories and is currently working on her memoirs. She is a wonderful
storyteller and likes to keep the children on the edge of their
seats.
Yaya also has certain idiosyncrasies and powers: she turns off
the lights by twisting her head around three times, she can stop
all activity in a room by blowing her famous foghorn whistle and
she can show you things from the past or the future by using her
famous dream bubble.
Yaya needs to be alone from time to time, either to take care of
something or to think. However, with her gang constantly demanding
attention, getting some time to herself can be an uphill battle.
